You can never become first on a public road, drive with a smile

You can never become first on a public road

The above line holds good if you are racing against time on any public road. If you did over take a car ahead of you, there will be countless car ahead of you before you reach your destination.

I drive around 50KMS/day and I have personally realized that by going fast you may actually reach your destination 5 or 10 minutes earlier, but on the way I would have got cursed and raged by hundreds of road users. So start early or start really late. And do ride with a smile, you could surely win lot of hearts.

drive safely

Tested on animals – Mahindra Renault Logan

Event: Mahindra Renault Logan Drivathon
Date: 25-12-2007 (Christmas Day)
Venue: YMCA, Nanadhanam, Chennai
Contact: S.Kumar
Mobile:98409 47464

It is supposed to be fun rally organized by Mahindra Renault Logan to test the mileage of your Mahindra Renault Logan.

  • Do you want to know who where the animals?
  • and Who tested on them?
  • and Who benefited out of this Mahindra Renault Logan Drivathon?

Before we start, Let us understand on how to test Mileage

  1. Fill up petrol- full tank
  2. check the odometer reading
  3. If you have trip meter, set it Zero
  4. take a long drive say about 100 and odd KMS, never switch off your car in between your drive (to get good readings)
  5. Follow the speed limit (45-55 KMS/hour)
  6. Once you reach 100 and odd KMS, go to next fuel station
  7. Top up the fuel, to full tank.
  8. Note the KMS traveled from your odometer, check the trip meter reading
  9. Note check how much of fuel was needed to have it full tank
  10. trip meter reading/ top up fuel needed to full tank will give you = Mileage i.e KM per Litre

So what happened at Mahindra Renault Logan Drivathon – car rally
I was there for the event at 8:30 AM at the venue. The event is supposed to start at 9:00AM which didn’t happen, because of the lack of management skills. Flag off happened, after few apologies made by the announcer.

I started to take the drive at 12:09 PM, went to the Fuel station at Venkanarayana Road.

A gentleman approached and said “Sir we will fill the tank full, out of which 5 litres of fuel price will be waived off and the rest you have to pay, Is that fine with you”.

I accepted, this is how they filled the fuel

My odometer readings were noted down and written on the card. My trip meter was made zero. And I started of to the rally.

Most cars had ladies and kids in the car – the best part was that, some car drivers took a break on the road side to take a leak. “What about the ladies and the kids?” What a shame?, Even if they had arranged for some nice place to take a short break for 2 hour long drive, it would have been nice. Well, my family did take a break at the Petrol Pump station at Venkatnarayana road, before the rally started. I realized, so was happy for my family too.

So my trip meter reading said 103 KMS when I was back from Mahabalipuram to Venkatanaraya road Bharat petrol pump station. I was doing between 50 and 60 KMS/hour. I was driving like a monkey as ordered, to execute things as said.

Now the top up started at the pumping station which recorded about 4.155 litres of petrol. So that means 103/4.155 should be my mileage. Which is actually wrong, because the Car fuel indicator says that my petrol tank is still not full. (Check the video)

My mileage is 24.789 KM per litre, WOW, I could believe it. The same car was doing last week, having a mileage of 9 KM per litre

Here is one more catch my fuel indicator was not saying that it is full tank, see the video to believe it. See other photos to know what was my readings.
data sheet
Click on the image for a larger view

Did you notice the time, which I referred while I entered the pump station 12:09 PM and at what time did I start 12:35 PM and at what time I reached the pump station again 2:59 PM
You want to why the delay
Mahindra Renault Logan - in queue just outside the pump station

Mahindra Renault Logan - in queue just outside side of road outside pump station
Click on the image for a larger view
Do you see the Mahindra Renault Logan on the opposite side of the road in a queue.

What is explained in the video?
If you noticed the video, I had taken at the time when I reached the YMCA ground, still wondering WHY the fuel indicator is not showing the fuel tank full. So it means that there is enough space to fill up some more fuel to make it full tank. Which most of them didn’t realize.

Now to answer the questions

Do you want to know who where the animals?
there were 100 and odd drivers with their family, driving their cars, following orders and not not having fun on the gracious day Christmas

and Who tested on us?
Mahindra Renault Logan Marketing team

A surprise did happen during the prize distribution ceremony. A owner of Mahindra Renault Logan was agitated and trying to claim for the prize as his car did a 40KM per litre mileage (Diesel version owner)

and Who benefited out of this Mahindra Renault Logan Drivathon?
Can you imagine 100 and odd drivers spending their money to filling up the fuel tank full and driving their own cars and following orders at the mercy of Mahindra Renault Logan team for only one reason to prove that Mahindra Renault can do 33KMs per litre for the petrol version and 37KMs per litre on the Diesel version.
I should say that the marketing guys made little spend by gaining more

  1. breakfast (bread sandwich and water, if you like it eat it else leave it. That was stance. Hospitality ZERO)
  2. 5 litres of fuel waived off during full tank session
  3. lunch (Saravana bhavan – Mini meals)
  4. and another 4-5 litres of fuel for top up total of 8-9 litres of fuel while including the 5 litre of fuel which was waived off during the full tank session (Petrol or Diesel)
  5. Spend on venue
  6. And of course the event management team.

Who are the loser?

  1. Fuel to fill up the tank
  2. quality family time on the Christmas day
  3. apart from that those god damn sponsor stickers from JK tyre and those numbers sticked all over the car. Who is gonna pay to remove that, With out spending money.

Car stickers
Mahindra Renault Logan owners are the ultimate losers to gain new customers

Who were the gainers?
Mahindra Renault Logan Marketing team – to make fake mileage result. It is pretty simple I say, you have around 100 odd drivers at your disposal feed them you have the results.

Do you want to know how this Viral Marketing is supposed to work?
Let’s say 100 and odd Mahindra Renault Logan happy customers, who had good mileage experience is about to unfold the secret to all their friends and relatives, well sort of boasting off that their car did give an ultimate mileage.

If you care for fellow car owners please digg this or post a link on your blogs. Atleast the new car owners can be spared.

How I bought my new Mahindra Renault Logan – space, value for Money- Review

Mahindra Renault Logan

The questions which I asked myself before I bought my car.

When should you buy a car?
When there is a need to commute (atleast 40 KMs a day) or for other reasons like family, prestige etc. The reason why I choose a sedan and not a hatchback was that, I take my car to my native place, which is around 650 KMs away. So didn’t want my family to feel cramped.

What would be the best option to buy a car?
If you have full cash, that is the best option available. If choosing finance, go for atmost 3 years not more than that. Look for any travel agencies their cars would be financed for not more than 3 years. That is the best value for money.

Why 3years?
Imagine if you took 5 years finance and at the end of 4 year you are planning to upgrade to a new car. Which I did, selling my Maruti 800. You end up making a huge loss.

Market price of car during the 4year + Finance settlement charges (1 year interest rate + pre closure interest amount) = Market price of your car at the 5 year.

What are the things you should look for?
Safety, Value for money, Space, Looks – these are my terms. May differ with individual.
Why?
The moment you drive your car from the car lot, the value of the car depreciates by 20 percent. Shit man. I look for value for money than looks. Look for your ideal car.

What car to choose, Petrol or Diesel, Why?
Petrol cars – good, if you are going to use for your personal and family use and won’t cross more than 50 KMS/day.
Diesel cars – good, if you are going to travel more than 60 KMS and odd/day. That should be better choice when you look at the service point of view. That is one reason you will find most cabs and travel agencies operate Diesel cars than the petrol one.

Now let us break down the pricing details of the car you plan to purchase.

Ex Showroom price – cost that the manufacturer expects, no tax.
On Road Price -Cost of the car + Life time road tax + Annual insurance

Now let me discuss where all you can save money in the price components

  1. Actual car value – manufacturer price – depends on the dealer. Bargain here with the dealer
  2. Annual Insurance – Don’t take the policy from the dealer, talk to some private insurance agencies (Bajaj Alliance, TATA AIG, ICICI lombard), even the public players like (New India Assurance) Bargain here
  3. Life time Road tax – Don’t even dream about it. The Government own our ass.
  4. Finance (if you have100% cash that is the best option) Don’t take the options from the dealer, talk to private players like (Kotak, ICICI, ABN Amro etc) Bargain here

Sites to visit before you buy a car http://www.carwale.com

The carwale site has enough calculators for eg. the EMI calculator.

Kindly note: I would have asked you not to get leads for the Finance and the Annual insurance from the dealer. Still compare the prices individually and the comprehensive package offered by the car dealer. Check which is the best & Go for it.

compare cars of your choice before you buy, take test drives, show it to your friends and family. You will come to hear about the good and bad about the car which you are planning to own.

Here is my test drive experience on Mahindra Renault Logan

Which gas station / petrol pump BESt?

Which gas station did you fill up, for your vehicle?

  1. This is the most common question which your friends question you, when you tell them that you didn’t get a better mileage.
  2. When your vehicle pollutes the atomosphere

Do you know what kind of graded petrol/diesel you fill up your vehicle?
OR
Does any one know according to gas stations, how they are graded?

A friend of mine who worked at various marketing agencies said that private one are the top quality ones and rest followed by public sectors

Here is the list in the order of purity and quality of gas as quoted by my friend

  1. Reliance
  2. Essar
  3. Shell
  4. BP – British petroleum
  5. BPCL – Bharat Petroleum corporation ltd.
  6. IOC – Indian oil corporation
  7. HPC- Hindustan petroleum corporation

Google didn’t help me out to find answer on this query. If any body has an answers I am ready to update this post with full credits to the righteous owner.

Most of the time it is a battle between friends saying, this is best, that is best. My quest for BESt just started.

Wildhogs – true essence of bikers

Dudes these guys rock, Yeah you guessed it right, it is about bikers. I am sure most of us have a group, right from childhood, If you have taken a road trip with your bunch of friends, you will surely love this movie. Most details of movie surely covered my road trips. I had been on road trips twice with my friends and planning for the third, coming week end.

Wildhogs

Starring Tim Allen, John Travolta, Martin Lawrence & William H Macy

Why I love this movie?
It is the character William H Macy , a computer geek and not so great biker, making mistakes, At the end of the movie he wins what he wants. He seems to be the looser from the very start of the movie, but wins his hearts desire.

Bikers Attitude?
The essence of bikers is actually conveyed in this movie. You don’t have to be true bikers (macho, arrogant etc), all it needs is the love to go on a long drive and enjoy with friends.

Sure it did win my heart.

3 Runs – 2 states & a driver

Well I am not talking about cricket right here, it is about a road trip which I have done 3 times between Chennai, Tamilnadu and Thrissur, kerala, with my family have a sole driver yours truly. It is about 672 KMS journey from Chennai to Thrissur on my Maruthi 800, the trips I have made during these times.

April 2004, November 2005 and August 2007 on the same Marthi 800 I own.

Few experiences I would like to share with all of you who are likely to head for a road trip.

I am sharing my experience on the recent road trip which I did on August 2007, usually I service my car before I head for a road trip, but this time was an exception. There was an emergency, my wife’s Father’s elder brother i.e my father inlaws  elder brother expired, so there was no time, we tried train and bus for booking tickets all in vain had no other option of taking the car for the trip.

Man was surely scary as I had not serviced my car, my engine coolant was almost empty was not sure will it last till the journey. Well here is guide which I had prepared before a road trip- “Check list before a road trip“. I would say I was lucky with my the Maruthi -most trusted proven vehicle.

We (my wife, my 6 yr old son and yours truly) started early in the morning, past 5 AM. The reason for a early touch down on the road is that the temperature would be low compared to bright sunny day. The route which I took was from my house to Koyambedu roundtana and then the Maduravoyal bypass which leads to past Tambaram. Currently the road doesn’t have median all the way to Tambaram ,these roads are getting wider and work is in progress, you can expect a 4 lane with medians. So you don’t have to worry too much about accidents. The bypass does have a toll, you need to pay to use the road.

From Tambaram till Villapuram you can see Tamilnadu roads has improved a lot. The roads are really good when compared to Chennai roads, they are wider, safer and the bus stops have a provision for them to stop with out hitting the normal traffic. Well there are places with gardens for your take a break, and a place for Lorry drivers to take rest. Lorries don’t have be parked on the road side instead they have provisions for the lorries to be parked.

Top view

Well if you wanted to take a complete U turn, you really have to worry a lot, as there are median which run long (that is actually good, rather than our 100 feet road,  couple of meters away and you fall a prey), once you see a cut on the median they are really safe to take the turn, They have provision for your vehicle to stop before you take the turn so some behind will just pass by and still you are comfortable for the turn.

It was close to 8:30 AM and I had touched Uladurpet, you need to be cautious as you need to take the right turn from the median which leads to Salem. When some one talks about Salem, I get reminded of my first road trip experience. Between Attur to Salem then roads are pathetic. This time I was worried about the roads, really lucky. They were patched  but still rattling and rocky. “If you have read Check list before a road trip” I would have mentioned about the type pressure, This road could spoil your shock absorbers and in turn you could have a bumpy ride.

Note: If you want to avoid the Attur – Salem road there is an alternative, take the Bangalore Highway from chennai- take diversion at Krishnagiri and touch dharmapuri to reach Salem. Please note this route is little large in terms of KMS close to another 40 KMS or so. Again Krishnagiri to Salem is almost 40-50 KMS  and not that great road always.

Next stop was Salem bypass there is tricky corner turn with no sign boards so you need enquire with local people for the route. Finally landed to a nice hotel “Sangeetha” by 12:00 noon, we drop here all the time. Kids can even play, there is a park we dropped at the noon so was really hot. Don’t expect a 5 star range toilets and of course the food are quite decent. Ample car parking space available.

You will tend to see lots of temples with Iyanar statues, they are colored bright with amazing hues. Our kids would have seen Hindu Gods who are almost their own size in Chennai. Some times you kids can get scared because of the size of Iyanar Statues.

Erode bypass also has a tricky corner  you may need to ask the locals to avoid the Erode town

Why by pass and not the town?
If by mistake you enter the town, you are heading for a good traffic, so you are inviting trouble against time. Take caution ask the local to avoid the town and take the bypass. I did once at Salem, took me around 45 minutes to exist the bypass and take a U turn to reach the bypass again.

One more note, Bypass roads always leads you straight, for the town you may have to take the diversion, the pitfall comes when you see a signboards showing the town name and we all fall a prey for that. Just enquire with the locals.

There are National Highways road development happening for 4 lane at some places at Salem and  Erode.

The next amazing road was the toll road at Coimbatore bypass which leads up to Walyar check post (Palaghat Border). Coimbatore bypass gives the driver a perfect 160 degree vision of the road, you will certainly know when a cattle is approaching the edge of the road, you certainly need to calculate at high speeds, that I leave it to you. Be careful these roads are quite dangerous, and by the way don’t travel on the neutral gear when you are approaching those toll gate which appear 6 -7 approx. times on that stretch. You may loose control, have them on lower gear to have good control.

I just want to tell fellow Chennaiites, Tamilnadu roads are thousand times far better than Kerala Roads, here is the fact. At the same time, Rest of Chennai, Tamilnadu Highways are better than Chennai roads, Why?

Because they seemed to be more safe, more relaxing than Chennai roads, I know what cropped in your minds, it is population, I completely accept. But it the same way our 100 feet road or Velachery by pass road was built, then some thing happened. Lot of signals and in between cuts which completely spoiled the driving experience. Well the government has provided subways (at saidapet bus terminus) Still cops hold the signal for people to cross the road. Even they have provided head over bridges right at Nungambakkam, our friends just cross the hectic road. Some cities purposefully built the subways little away from the bus terminus or the railway station just as to encourage people to have a healthy exercise.(some where I read it on the blogs)

Just a note: Maduravoyal to Tambram by pass road has pitfalls too, just like our 100 feet roads. Caution is needed when you see the road barriers broken at the side of the road, they are not broken because of an accident, they have been vandalized by locals for them to cross the steep uphill to reach the road (just take a peep at that uphill these bikers have to take to reach the road), they might just drop by, out of the blue to say hi, so be wary about these 5 sensed animals.

Any ways  have a safe and happy journey.

Check list before a road trip

Are you planning to take your car for a long drive (long drive – at least a minimum of 100 KMS). He are few tips, do and don’t which could help you for safer and refreshing long drive.

Tips:

Get your car serviced before a long drive, Why?
You don’t know what are the wear out parts your car currently has.
Do have a checklist prepared before you take a long drive.

Checklist:

  1. Brake oil fully topped up to level indicated
  2. Radiator coolant fully topped up to the level indicated
  3. Window wiper water fully topped up (they are life saver when it is raining)
  4. Have NEWS papers (minimum of last 3 days or so) – when the window wiper water gets emptied, they help you to clean the glass spotless
  5. BUY tobacco packets if you forget to take the NEWS papers.
  6. Fill up your fuel tank. Try filling it up in the evening, people say that the density of petrol/diesel is more towards the evening (might be a myth, but I fill it up in the evening)
  7. Have spare head lamps, check whether the same are working currently
  8. Caution: - Fill the prescribed air pressure in your tires. The more the air pressure (+”2 - 5″ points) the more your save on your fuel but the worst thing is that, the ride gets bumpy, you could get your shock absorbers in trouble. As you ride the air pressure in your tires increases gradually. Unless or Until you are not sure about the roads you travel, please have the prescribed air pressure for your tires.
  9. Have road maps. You can get them at HigginBothams, LandMark or other book stores

Do’s:

  1. Carry sufficient amount of water (I meant H20 ;) ) for all the passengers, little more is always good, little less of H20. You could get yourself dehydrated.
  2. Load your car with citrus fruits, avoid oily, fried stuffs. Have soft drinks to substitute glucose. They help you to recharge.
  3. Take short breaks, driver needs to exercise and move around to avoid fatigue. Stick to your timings of short breaks
  4. Lunch/Dinner- For drivers I would say ample is enough, too much he could be in trouble.
  5. Turn on your Car A/C and keep the A/C level low in order to save fuel.
    1. A/C help your car clean
    2. When at high speeds, wind drag on your car is less when your window is raised

Don’ts:

  1. Never booze when you drive. They don’t get along with each other. (at least the driver shouldn’t drink)
  2. Never overtake a transport corporation bus, they are always rude, they won’t give you way.
  3. Most Lorries travel at the right corner of the road with a steady speed, If you are confident to overtake, give him a buzz so as to alert him
  4. Caution: When overtaking, if your car doesn’t have enough power to complete the overtaking, please switch of your A/C. Don’t be a split personality, just avoid overtaking unless or until it is completely safe.
  5. Caution: If you are driving down the hill, Zipping from 0-100 KMPH and having your gear at neutral can invite trouble, your brakes won’t work expected. You need to be on the lower gear for your car to be in control. Mostly have your gears to 3rd or 4th depending on the steep decline you are making. Driving down the hill is a thrill, but be careful.
  6. Caution: Are you about to travel uphill, take care to top up your engine radiator coolant. And the same for your brake fluid. Don’t strain your engine by shifting to higher gears, cut them to lower ones to save the engine than the fuel.

Before you start to drive, check all the items in your checklist is checked. Check the brakes are working. Turn on your car A/C, now turn on the music to hard or soft rock or tune to your favorite FM, keep the volume low, they help you hear other sounds on the road. My serious advice would be travel during the day and not in the night. “Flashy lights and no one to help you out when you need directions) Start  early, but not too late, enquire with people who have already traveled and learn for the directions.

Happy traveling, have a safe road trip.

Seth Godin needs this mobile

I had been to “The MobileStore” at Annanagar, 2nd avenue, chennai last evening, and was in the search for Scratch guard for my Nokia N70 as soon my eyes was on the samsung SGH- E250 with a special feature saying Mobile tracker, It got my attention. This mobile has all features of Nokia N70 + wifi + Mobile tracker - theft guard and the best price is 7800 INR (approx) i.e half the price of Nokia N70.

I remember looking in devanand blog post my mobile my mobile, and here is what Seth post had said.

I personally feel having two credit card sized devices one on the mobile and another one on you neck or your hand or in your wallet is another pain in the butt.
If you could forget your mobile, you could also forget taking the card sized device.
I would say the best option would be a mobile which automatically would sends sms to your pre configured mobile numbers as soon one changes the SIM card.

Kindly Note: Most models of Samsung Mobile phone has the Mobile tracker installed by default.

Convergence: when the whole world is looking forward to have all controls under one device, for instance mobile phones have integrated Music, Photos and  Internet access. Why do we want the Mobile tracker be another piece of hardware on your butt. Just consider the user experience of carrying two device at a time

Brand vs Local shop

A discussion which Mr. Baskran of Castrol BikeZone MSF Manager and I had last week.
You might have known about my death of Nokia N70 and the rebirth of Nokia N70 which I spoke in the other blog.

He had been to my office at Adventnet for a friendly chat on one afternoon and I told him that my Nokia N70 had a rebirth, I should thank the bright young fellow entrepreneur who primary business was on selling caller cards and the second one on servicing mobile Phones. In just 48 hrs my mobile Nokia N70 was in my hands and full functional. There was horrible difference when I had handed over my mobile to Nokia authorized service center at HCL Infinet. After looking in to the mobile they said that I either had to replace the mother board or replace a new mobile.

So here is the question

Why HCL infinet couldn’t fix my mobile where as the local shop keeper could fix my mobile in just 48hrs?

HCL Infinet – replace mother board or buy new mobile
Local Mobile service center – buys a “power IC” from Gagdet store at Burma Bazzar near Parrys corner.

HCL Infinet  150 INR for checking the mobile
HCL Infinet repair cost estimated – 11000 INR

Local mobile service center – 4000 INR (3500 INR for Power IC + Service charge 500 “out of sheer user experience and happiness”)

What I asked Mr. Baskaran.

me: Why do Big brands don’t look in to the small details and try to fix it up, so that the customer benefits?
Bakaran: It is because of product packaging. Chips or IC’s are not available for the Big brands separately. They are either sold as Unit package/ Components which will consist of IC’s or chips. It is because they need to pay tax to the government as unit packages, if they are going to pay tax for smaller components they may have to pay larger tax.

By this time I could figure out that maintenance is also easy in warehouse.

Baskaran: the same holds good in automobile Industry. The cost of the bike is cheap by adding additional taxes the cost of the bike is almost double.

So what do you feel, should you blame the government for increasing the tax or big players for not giving the benefit to the customers.

End of the day, If you are looking for better service it is big brands and if you have lot of money.
Small things can be fixed at our local shops and getting things promptly

Bajaj Pulsar – Open your fly

I am fan of Bajaj Pulsar – After seeing the new Bajaj Pulsar DTSi 200, I felt the under line or the punch line message should be “open the fly” rather than “Definitely male”. Good design, I would wish for a single feature of the Bajaj Pulsar DTSi 180 to be available on Bajaj Pulsar DTSi 200. I had boasted about Pulsar long ago in one of my post comparing with Honda Unicorn.

Can we have this
